Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) for Caregivers

A compassionate journey towards mental and emotional wellness

Caring for someone you love can be deeply meaningful and deeply exhausting. Many caregivers carry anxiety, sadness, guilt, and emotional overload while continuing to show up for others day after day. At Journey Mental & Emotional Wellness, therapy is a place where you are allowed to pause, breathe, and receive support.

What is Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based approach that helps caregivers relate differently to difficult thoughts and emotions so they don’t take over your life. ACT doesn’t ask you to “be positive” or ignore how hard things feel. Instead, it helps you build skills to move forward with compassion for yourself, even when life is heavy.

ACT is practical, gentle, and collaborative. In sessions, we focus on:

  • Understanding how thoughts and emotions show up for you

  • Learning skills to step back from what pulls you down

  • Practicing ways to stay present and grounded

  • Taking small, meaningful steps that support your well-being

You don’t have to “fix” yourself or force change. Therapy meets you where you are.

ACT for Depression

Caregiving can slowly drain energy, motivation, and hope especially when there is loss, change, or long-term strain.

ACT helps you:

  • Loosen the grip of harsh self-criticism and hopeless thoughts

  • Gently re-engage in activities that matter to you

  • Make room for sadness without letting it define you

  • Reconnect with purpose, meaning, and values

  • Improve daily functioning one step at a time

ACT for Anxiety

Caregivers often live with constant worry about doing enough, making the right decisions, or what might happen next.

ACT helps you:

  • Notice anxious thoughts without getting stuck in them

  • Reduce constant mental looping and “what if” thinking

  • Stay present during stressful moments

  • Build confidence in handling uncertainty

  • Take meaningful action even when anxiety shows up

ACT for Emotional Regulation

Many caregivers are taught to “stay strong” and push emotions aside until they overflow or shut down.

ACT helps you:

  • Notice emotions without reacting impulsively

  • Reduce emotional suppression and avoidance

  • Build tolerance for intense feelings

  • Respond thoughtfully instead of automatically

  • Feel more emotionally steady over time

ACT for Adjustment to Life Changes

Caregivers are often thrust into roles they didn’t expect sometimes suddenly, sometimes over time.

ACT helps you:

  • Cope with changes you cannot control

  • Process emotions related to loss, transition, or new responsibilities

  • Reduce struggle with “this shouldn’t be happening” thoughts

  • Adapt while staying grounded in what matters most to you

  • Move forward without needing everything to feel resolved
